For many collegiate sports, the 2019-20 COVID moratorium on recruiting made it extremely difficult to identify and court potential athletes. And it was even more difficult for teams like Carroll women’s lacrosse which didn’t already have a team or a competitive season under their belt.

Scheduled to begin play in 2020, Head Coach Amy Roguski had a tough time IDing and recruiting players during the pandemic, as many other teams did.

Once the ability to recruit in full force was restored, Roguski redoubled her efforts and she is happy to report that Lynx women’s lacrosse is up and running and readying for their first season in the spring.

“So far we have 11 women committed,” noted Roguski. “We technically need one more to compete, but I would love five to six more women to join!”

Freshman Kirby Henneman is one of those 11 commits. A member of the state championship lacrosse team at Westminster during her sophomore year, Henneman explains that “I certainly am excited to have a lacrosse team and play one of the sports I love!”

After Carroll, Henneman plans to transfer to a four-year institution to earn a degree in early elementary education. For now though, she is looking forward to meeting new friends on the lacrosse team and having the balance that playing a sport can provide. “Playing sports holds you accountable for your schoolwork,” Henneman asserts, “I know I strive to do better in school when I am playing sports. I feel like I stay on top of my work more.”

According to Roguski, the current team members are a mix of athletes who were already attending Carroll and some “who are attending Carroll for the student-athlete experience.”

“Carroll offers student-athletes an exceptional education while being able to play in a competitive conference,” Roguski affirmed. Some of the women Lynx laxers want to continue to play at a four-year college or university so “having the opportunity to play at Carroll will allow them to start their undergraduate degrees and play in a competitive environment to prepare for those four-year institutions.”
